Guildford Hockey Club - Great Hockey For Everyone

Schools Programme

Guildford Hockey Club’s schools programme introduces children from across Surrey and Hampshire to hockey and, through regular coaching, fosters a lifelong passion for the sport.

Guildford coaches deliver hockey to over 3000 children in more than 20 local schools across Surrey and Hampshire. Highlights include our primary school hockey tournaments held in partnership with Charterhouse School, and our coach development programme for staff and parents who want to get involved delivering hockey in the community.

  • Nicky Dowds

Nicky’s role is to oversee the delivery of outstanding coaching in local schools. This involves recruiting, training, and supporting a team of great coaches; working with schools to understand their coaching needs; running hockey festivals and fixtures; and fostering the link between school hockey and opportunities to play at local clubs.

  • Liz Carleton

With over twenty years as a primary school teacher, Liz’s role is to make sure that our relationship with each school runs smoothly, that we welcome new partners schools, that the programme has access to long-term funding, and that the coaching team are organized, supported, and able to deliver outstanding hockey sessions.

  • Dan Fox

As Director of Hockey, Dan has the overall responsibility for delivering the club’s mission of ‘Great Hockey for Everyone.’ The school programme allows more people to try hockey for the first time and a chance to develop their passion for the sport by learning new skills, having fun, and forging friendships on and off the pitch. In practice, Dan delivers coach development sessions to teachers, runs masterclass sessions in schools, and helps to plan and how the programme develops over time.

We are proud of our fantastic partner schools and our work together. Should you wish to find out more, or to introduce hockey at your local school then please get in touch via the form below.

School Hockey Case Studies

  • Busbridge Junior School

Curriculum delivery every Friday for two hours means that every child at Busbridge Junior School plays hockey for half a term each year. Plus, a thriving after-school club every Friday using the school’s new MUGA gives 16 players the chance to receive outstanding coaching week by week. The school enters the GHC Primary School festival three times a year, hosted assemblies delivered by current and former international hockey players and promote opportunities to join club hockey sessions through their in-school communications to parents.

  • Charterhouse School

As well as an established pitch-use agreement, Charterhouse uses Guildford Hockey Club coaches to deliver an outstanding hockey programme across its girls and boys hockey terms. The school gives every pupil the chance to play hockey in school and the opportunity to try club hockey through its sessions linked with Guildford Hockey Club. Charterhouse hosts the tri-annual primary school hockey festival and school students act as umpires and team coaches. As part-host of the Guildford Talent Academy Charterhouse and Guildford’s strong connection benefits players, coaches, and supporters from both organisations.

  • Broadwater School

Free after-school hockey sessions led by the GHC coaching team, are generously supported by Occupational Health Assessment | Occupational Health Service a local occupational health assessment business that promotes careers in the health sector. Part of the programme is delivering regular weekday hockey sessions that introduce children to hockey, as well as taster weeks each summer. Broadwater School is home to Guildford Hockey Club and hosts two hockey pitches, the Guildford Club House, as well as a suite of on-site health and fitness facilities.
